
Four Frogs named Arthur Ashe Scholars

FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU football players Ervin Dickerson and David Hawthorne, women's tennis player Andrea Morgado and women's soccer standout Michelle Nguyen have been named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars.Diverse: Issues In Higher Education established the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Awards in 1992 to honor undergraduate students of color who excel both academically and athletically.
The awards were inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.'s commitment to education, as well as his love for the game of tennis. In addition to their athletic ability, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must exhibit academic excellence and community activism.
Dickerson was a first-team selection in football with Hawthorne a third-team pick. Both were graduate students while playing for the Horned Frogs in the 2007 campaign.
Dickerson was TCU's leading receiver with 40 catches for 514 yards and four touchdowns. Hawthorne, a three-year starter at linebacker, placed second on the Frogs with 84 tackles. He signed a free-agent contract with the Seattle Seahawks.
A first-team Arthur Ashe Jr. pick in women's tennis, Morgado was a three-year letterwinner for TCU. Morgado posted 94 singles and doubles victories in three full seasons of play at TCU.
Nguyen, a fourth-team choice in women's soccer, led the MWC in conference matches only with three assists and 0.43 assists per contest. She was fifth in league play with three goals and 1.29 points per match. Nguyen had two assists, including the match-winner, in a victory over No. 22 Utah. She also scored the game-winning goal against Texas Tech. Overall, she posted five goals and six assists on the year and was named to Top Drawer Soccer's Women's College Team of the Week following her two-goal effort against Air Force.
