TULSA, Okla. - TCU men's tennis player Cosmin Cotet opened play at the 2008 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships on Wednesday with a straight-sets victory over No. 62 Christoph Muller of Rice to advance to the round of 32 in Tulsa, Okla. Cotet will compete in both singles and doubles play on Thursday.
The TCU senior posted a 7-6(2), 6-4 victory over Muller, marking the 14-ranked opponent Cotet has defeated during the 2007-08 season. Cotet, ranked No. 39 nationally, was down double-set point in the first frame before battling back to eventually win the set.
"Cosmin started slow today, but got his bearings straight and literally stepped up his game," said TCU head coach Dave Borelli. "After coming back from being down double-set point, he really controlled the rest of the match."
Cotet will face the winner of today's match between No. 46 Cory Parr of Wake Forest and No. 9-16 seed Andre Begemann of Pepperdine on Thursday at 11 a.m. Cotet defeated Parr last fall in Tulsa, and fell in straight sets to Begemann earlier this spring.
The TCU duo of Brink and Cotet will also compete on Thursday, as they will meet Miami's third-seeded duo of Sundberg and Vallverdu in the round of 32.
