SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Lizzy Karoly, a California native, netted the game-winner in the second half to lead TCU to a 2-1 victory over San Diego State at the SDSU Sports Deck on Friday afternoon."The resiliency the kids showed is tremendous. They are to be commended for that, but we can't wait to go down before we decide to step up though," said head coach Dan Abdalla. "We have to put more opportunities on frame, but we get a couple of days now to get ready and focused for next week."
Kaylie Garcia, a redshirt freshman from Oklahoma City, Okla., tried to put the Horned Frogs on the board early in the contest, firing a shot from just outside the box, but watched as her shot sailed wide of the net.
Garcia came right back in the 14th minute, rocketing a shot towards the goal, but Aztec goalkeeper Christi Yount came up with the save as Karoly made a run towards the goal.
SDSU's Heather Vandevanter put the Aztecs up in the contest, beating Kelsey Walters off a corner kick in the 27th minute of the first half.
Following a shot by Garcia that was blocked by an Aztec midfielder, Jackie Torda almost put the ball into the back of the net off a pass by Karoly late in the half, but watched as her shot went wide of the goal.
With 5 minutes remaining in the half, Nikki Wilbur, a sophomore from Laguna Niguel, Calif., headed the ball towards the goal off a corner kick by Taylor, but the ball flew over the top of the goal to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of San Diego State.
Midway through the second half, Torda fired a shot from 25 yards out, but it sailed wide of the goal. Following a free kick by Taylor that hit the crossbar, Wilbur rebounded the shot and beat Yount to tie the match at 1-1 in the 60th minute.
Five minutes later, Karoly followed her own shot and turned to her right from about 16 yards out, striking the ball into the top half of the net past Yount to give TCU the go-ahead score in the contest. The goal by Karoly moved her into a tie for No. 3 all-time in career goals scored in a TCU uniform.
It appeared as if the Horned Frogs were going to increase the lead late in the match when Garcia crossed the ball into the box, but Torda couldn't crack the scoring column off a header.
On defense, sophomore Kelsey Walters had a big day in goal, saving eight shots, including one on a breakaway in the second half to keep the score at 2-1 in favor of TCU. Yount posted two stops on the day, but faced pressure from the Horned Frog offensive attack all second half.
With the win, TCU brought its regular-season record to 13-3-2 overall and 4-2-1 in MWC play, while SDSU dropped to 6-9-3 overall and 2-4-1 in Mountain West action.
"We are going into the conference tournament playing to win. Everyone is back to 0-0-0 and everyone has the same opportunity, so we will see what happens," said Abdalla.
The Purple and White will next be in action at the Mountain West Conference Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. TCU will have to wait until Sunday to find out its opening-round opponent in the tournament next week.
