LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Jackie Torda netted the game-winner in overtime off an assist by Katie Runyon to give TCU a 2-1 victory over San Diego State in opening-round action at the Mountain West Conference Tournament on Wednesday.
Early in the contest, redshirt freshman Katie Taylor tried the find the back of the net off a free kick, but watched as her shot was saved by SDSU's Christi Yount.
In the 31st minute, Jordan Calhoun, a Norman, Okla., native, put TCU on the board first, punching the ball past Yount off a cross by Lizzy Karoly. The goal for Calhoun, who was named the MWC Freshman of the Year on Tuesday, marked her 15th goal of the season and moved her into first-place all-time in TCU history in goals scored for a single-season.
Following the 15-minute intermission, SDSU tied the match at 1-1 when Cat Walker got behind the Horned Frog defense and beat keeper Kelsey Walters from the left side of the box.
Sophomore Jackie Torda fired right back as she connected on two-consecutive shot's, but watched as the ball sailed high of the goal on two-consecutive trips down the field.
It appeared as if Michelle Nguyen put the Purple and White back up in the match midway through the second half off a scramble in the box, but her shot was blocked by the Aztec defense to keep the score knotted at 1-1.
Following a header by Cheryl Martin in the 65th minute that went wide, defender Chelsey Wilgenburg rocketed the ball towards the net late in the contest, but watched as her ball sailed high.
Runyon, a freshman from Quincy, Ill., tried one last time to put the Purple and White ahead in regulation, but her shot with 10 seconds to go in the period was saved by Yount to force overtime.
The Horned Frogs connected on two shots during the first overtime before Torda gave TCU its first win in post-season play in program history under head coach Dan Abdalla in the 98th minute of the match. On the play, Taylor sent a ball deep into the SDSU box, but it deflected off an Aztec defender before Runyon was able to send the ball to Torda, who laid in it past Yount to secure the victory.
TCU, who controlled the ball for most of the match, out-shot San Diego State, 17-8, including 3-0 during the overtime session. On offense, Torda led the Horned Frogs with four shots and one goal, while Wilgenburg posted three shots on the day.
On defense, Walters recorded two saves, while Yount stopped five shots at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
TCU, who moved to 14-3-2 overall on the season, will play No. 2 seeded Utah tomorrow at 2 p.m. CT. The Frogs earlier this year upended the Utes, 2-0, in Fort Worth. The semifinal match against Utah will be televised live on The Mtn.
