FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU will have Nina Munch-Soegaard and a pair of doubles team in action in the final day of the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional Championship. Munch-Soegaard won two matches to secure her name in the finals Monday, while the duo of Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska and Maria Babanova and Munch-Soegaard advanced into the doubles semifinals.
As a singles finalist, Munch-Soegaard solidified a spot at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships held Nov. 6-9 at the University of Virginia's Boyd Tinsley Tennis Center at Boar's Head Sports Club. The doubles team that is crowned ITA Southwest Regional champions Monday will also punch their tickets to the event.
"We were well represented deep in the draws today. We had some excellent results and I'm really excited for Nina as she is headed to her first Indoor."
Munch-Soegaard, ranked 47th by the ITA in singles play, claimed both of her wins in straight sets Sunday, defeating No. 15 Megan Falcon of LSU in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-4, and wrapping up the day by taking down No. 27 Csilla Borsanyi from Baylor, 6-3, 6-3.
Harkins entered the semifinals after topping No. 45 Vanja Corovic from UT, 6-3, 2-0 (retired) in her morning match Sunday, but ended her singles stretch after losing to No. 34 and fourth-seeded Taylor Ormond from Baylor, 6-4, 6-3.
In the main draw doubles quarterfinals, ninth-seeded duo of Babanova/Munch-Soegaard cruised to an 8-1 victory over Texas A&M's Christina Amo and Ashley Turpin. The tandem will face the 11th-ranked doubles team in the nation, Megan Falcon and Mykala Hedberg from LSU, in the semifinals Monday morning at 10 a.m.
"Nina and Maria came out on fire in the doubles and had that great energy that they always bring. They did a nice job closing out the match."
After being down 3-0 early in the match, second-seeded TCU team of Harkins and Sydorska battled their way to a 8-5 win over the fifth-seed pairing of Taylor Ormand and Jelena Stanivuk from Baylor. The ninth-ranked doubles team in the country advances to the semifinals to square-off against the 12th-ranked duo of Marija Milic and Vanja Corovic from Texas.
"Anna and Macall played one of the best matches that I can remember them playing. They were up against two top opponents who played excellent tennis and we matched their level, winning the big points and winning the match."
In the singles consolation draw, freshman Kayla Duncan earned two wins to advance into the consolation finals. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native defeated LSU's Mykala Hedberg, 6-4, 6-2, in the first match of the day and ended her afternoon with a win over Texas Tech's Simone Tempelton, 6-1, 6-1.
"Kayla stepped it up and showed a lot of variety in her game today. She is developing well and continues to be the best she can be."
Sophomore Idunn Hertzberg advanced to the consolation semifinals after topping Maggie Mello from Texas, 6-4, 1-0 (ret.), but fell to LSU's Nicole Kantor 6-1, 6-0 to end her weekend.
