Brighiu, Simon Move On in Doubles at Regionals

COLLEGE STATION, Texas--TCU sophomore Emmanuel Brighiu and junior Adrian Simon posted a pair of doubles victories Sunday to move into the semifinal round at the Wilson/ITA South Central Regional Championships.
The Horned Frog doubles pair comprised the lone TCU players still alive in main draw competition following competition Sunday. In consolation play, Simon and sophomore teammate Zach Nichols both reached the round of 16 with two victories each in the consolation bracket.
Brighiu and Simon opened the day with an easy 8-1 doubles win over Baylor's Mark Bruche and Dominik Mueller in the round of 16 before earning a walkover victory over Rice's Rosa and Scheil due to illness. The Frog duo is next scheduled to face Texas' fifth-seeded tandem of Dimitar Kutrovsky and Joshua L. Zavala on Monday at 3 p.m. in the semifinal round.
TCU's other doubles team in action Sunday, the No. 2 seeded grouping of senior Kriegler Brink and Nichols, dropped an 8-6 decision to Louisiana Lafayette's Piotr Banas and Piotr Olechowski in the Round of 16.
In singles action, Brink and Brighiu each reached the round of 16 with victories, Brink a 6-2, 6-0 win over SMU's Brian Griffin and Brighiu a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Texas Tech's Sinisa Markovic. Both Frogs were then eliminated during the round of 16 to higher-seeded opponents. Brink lost a three-set match, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, to Rice's fifth-seeded Christoph Muller, while Brighiu was dropped by No. 7 seed Oliver Sajous (Texas), 6-1, 6-4.
Nichols and Simon will continue on in consolation singles play Sunday. Nichols downed Texas' Rook Schellenberg, 6-4, 6-3, in the round of 32 before posting a 6-3, 7-6(8) win over Texas Tech's David Gonzalez in the round of 16. Simon dispatched UT Arlington's David Subirats, 6-2, 6-4, in the round of 32 and Ethan Horn, also of Texas Tech, 6-1, 6-2 during the round of 16.
