FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU netted two second half goals to upend Utah on Saturday night 2-0 at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
Opening the match it looked as if junior Michelle Nguyen gave the Horned Frogs an early lead off an assist by Kaylie Garcia, but her shot sailed wide of the goal to keep the score knotted at 0-0.
In the 19th minute, midfielder Nikki Wilbur tried to connect from outside the box, but watched as her shot was saved by Utah goalkeeper Hannah Turpen. The Purple and White closed out the half, firing away at Turpen as Jordan Calhoun and Jackie Torda each recorded shots to end the half.
Coming out of halftime, Katie Taylor posted two-straight shot attempts to start the half, but couldn't crack the scoring column.
In the 59th minute of the match, freshman Jordan Calhoun, a Norman, Okla., native, fired the ball past Turpen to give TCU the 1-0 lead in the match. On the play, senior Caroline Starns connected on a shot from the right side of the box, but the ball deflected off Turpen and Calhoun was there to put the ball into the back of the net.
In the 84th minute, Cheryl Martin, a defender from Las Vegas, netted her second goal of the season, heading the ball into the goal off a corner kick by Taylor to give the Horned Frogs the 2-0 victory in front of 1,746 people, which is the fourth-largest attendance in stadium history.
For the match, Calhoun scored her 13th goal of the season and posted three shots, while Taylor and Torda each chipped in with two shots apiece to lead TCU on offense. Calhoun, who only needs two more goals to become the all-time single-season leader in goals scored, has now posted goals in three of TCU's five conference matches. With her assist in the 59th minute, Starns moved into No. 2 all-time in single-season assists.
On defense, Kelsey Walters recorded her fifth shutout of the year and first in Mountain West Conference action. The Utes' Turpen, who was undefeated in goal coming into the match, saved five shots.
The Horned Frogs moved to 11-3-1 overall and 3-2-0 in conference action, while Utah dropped to 7-8-2 and 3-2-0 in MWC play. The Purple and White have now posted the most wins in a single-season in 20 years.
TCU will next be in action Oct. 24 against UNLV. Start time for the match is set for 7 p.m. in Fort Worth.
