FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU and UNLV battled to a 1-1 double overtime draw on Friday night in front of 1,239 spectators at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
The Horned Frogs, who pressured the Rebels all night, looked to have taken an early lead in the match when Jordan Calhoun took a cross from Courtney Johnson in the middle of the box and fired away at UNLV goalkeeper Alicia Lugo, but her shot sailed wide of the net to keep the score knotted at 0-0.
Following a corner kick by Katie Taylor in the 8th minute of the match, it appeared that senior Caroline Starns put the Horned Frogs ahead in the match, beating Lugo off a header, but the Purple and White were called for a foul inside the box and the goal was taken off the scoreboard.
TCU, who recorded 12 of the 14 shots in the half, kept the pressure on the Rebel defense in the 30th minute of the contest when freshman defender Chelsey Wilgenburg connected on a shot from outside the box, but the ball hit the post and bounced away from the goal.
Following the 15 minute intermission, UNLV's Niki Connolly broke the tie in the 57th minute just beating TCU goalkeeper Kelsey Walters off an assist by Ashleigh Shoughro. Midway through the second half, Jackie Torda tried to punch one in off a pass from Alex Mechalske, but her shot sailed high to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of UNLV.
Torda netted the equalizer in the 84th minute of the second half, scoring off an assist by Kaylie Garcia. On the play, Garcia took the ball on the right side of the box and sent a bending ball back to Torda who headed it past Lugo.
In the first overtime period, TCU came out of the break firing as the Horned Frogs posted the first five shots of overtime. Karoly, a junior from California, looked to have secured the TCU victory in the 96th minute of the match off a cross from Johnson, but Lugo came out of the box to divert Karoly's shot wide of the open goal.
The Horned Frogs recorded two more chances in the final overtime period, but couldn't find the back of the net to bring the final score to 1-1.
Overall, TCU was led on offense by Torda who posted five shots and one goal. On defense, Kelsey Walters stopped seven balls, while Lugo recorded eight saves. Friday night's match marked the final home contest for seniors Sara Schneider, Starns and Johnson.
TCU moved to 11-3-2 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play, while the Rebels brought their record to 11-5-2 overall and 3-2-1 in conference action.
The Horned Frogs will next be in action on Sunday against Texas Tech. Start time for the match in Lubbock is set for 1 p.m.
