FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU outshot BYU 21-18 for the match, including 12-8 in the second half, but it wasn't enough as the Horned Frogs dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 contest Thursday afternoon in front of the fourth-largest crowd in Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium history.
"I though the kids responded to what we asked them to do and I was very happy with that," said head coach Dan Abdalla. "We just need to do a better job with our decisions in the final third and give ourselves a higher percentage of opportunities."
TCU, who pressured the Cougar defense for most of the day, came out of the gates on the attack as freshman Jordan Calhoun fired a shot from the right side of the box 19 minutes into the match. On the play, Calhoun got behind the BYU defense and looked to play the ball into the back of the net, but just missed the goal as Cougar goalkeeper McKinzie Olson came out of the box to send the freshman's shot wide.
Midway through the first half it looked as if redshirt freshman Kaylie Garcia would crack the scoring column, but Garcia's shot was saved by Olson in the 35th minute to keep the scored knotted at 0-0 at the break.
Following intermission, Jackie Torda connected on a shot in the 47th minute, but Olson came up with another big save on the play. It looked as if junior Lizzy Karoly finally put TCU on the board early in the half, but watched as her powerful shot was blocked by the BYU defense.
In the 78th minute of the match, defender Cheryl Martin took a corner kick from Katie Taylor and appeared to have put TCU ahead late in the match off a header, but the ball just missed the top-half of the goal to keep the score at 0-0.
BYU's Kassidy Christensen netted the game-winning goal in the 81st minute of the match off an assist by Lauren Anderson. On the play, Anderson slid the ball to the left-side of the box to Christensen and just beat TCU goalkeeper Kelsey Walters for the lone goal of the contest.
The Purple and White recorded three more shots in the match, including one by Taylor, but couldn't even the score at 1-1.
"I think today was a big improvement from our other conference games," said Karoly. "We had our chances, but we just couldn't find the back of the net."
With the loss, TCU moved to 10-3-1 overall and 2-2-0 in conference play, while BYU bettered its record to 11-5-0 overall and remained undefeated in conference action at 4-0-0.
TCU, who played in front of 1,580 fans on Thursday, was led on offense by Calhoun who posted seven shots, while Taylor chipped in with four. In goal, Walters recorded six saves, while Olson stopped eight shots on the afternoon.
The Horned Frogs will be back in action on Saturday against Utah. Start time for the match is set for 7 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
