USAFA, Colo. - TCU scored three second half goals to down Air Force 3-1 at the Cadet Soccer Stadium on Sunday."We have to be a little bit stronger mentally when dealing with the elements from the beginning of a game," said head coach Dan Abdalla. "I was extremely happy with how our kids responded in the second half though."
Air Force broke the scoring column first, putting the ball into the goal two minutes into the contest when Roni Yadlin just beat the outstretched arms of TCU goalkeeper Kelsey Walters from inside the box. Following the Falcon goal, Caroline Starns looked to tie the match up in the 22nd minute, but had her shot blocked.
Sophomore defender Cheryl Martin tried to even the score midway through the half, heading the ball off a corner kick by Michelle Nguyen, but Falcon goalkeeper Ashlee Curtis came up with the save.
Finally, freshman Chelsey Wilgenburg, who posted a season-high five shots during the first half, ended the period blasting two shots but couldn't split the posts as both sailed wide of the goal.
Following the break, TCU came out firing on all cylinders as the Horned Frogs used Wilgenburg, Courtney Johnson, Kelly Faerber, Kaitlyn Shelledy, Nguyen, Katie Runyon and Kaylie Garcia to ignite the TCU attack. Overall, the Purple and White fired the first 10 shots of the half. Starns, a senior from Arlington, evened the score at 1-1 in the 61st minute, heading the ball past the Air Force keeper off an assist by Runyon.
Three minute later, freshman Jordan Calhoun connected on her 12th goal of the season from 10 yards out to give TCU the 2-1 lead off a pass from Chelsea Cody. Following a shot by Lizzy Karoly that hit the post, redshirt freshman Katie Taylor scored her first career goal, booming a shot into the back of the net in the 74th minute from the right corner of the box off a pass from Cody.
Finally, Garcia looked to have increased the Horned Frog lead late in the contest, but watched as her shot hit the crossbar.
For the match, TCU outshot Air Force, 22-8, including 14-6 in the second half. The Horned Frogs, who moved to 10-2-1 overall and 2-1-0 in Mountain West Conference play, have now posted the most wins in program history since 2000. With the loss, the Falcons dropped to 3-10-0 and 0-3-0 in conference action.
TCU will next be in action against BYU. Start time for the match is set for Noon on Thursday at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
