FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU men's tennis team garnered a preseason national ranking of No. 62, as released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Tuesday. Three Frogs appeared in the national singles rankings, led by senior Cosmin Cotet at No. 27.
"I'm happy with the start of the season," said TCU head coach Dave Borelli. "The team ranking was expected because of last season, and we will have a long way to go this year."
Cotet, the lone senior on the men's roster, earned a career-high singles ranking of No. 27 after posting a 4-2 record in the fall season. Cotet knocked off three nationally ranked opponents in the first half of the season, including an upset of No. 2 Steven Moneke of Ohio State.
TCU newcomer Adrian Simon grabbed a preseason singles ranking of No. 54 after completing a solid fall campaign. In his first match playing for the Purple and White, Simon upset No. 60 Thomas Liversage of San Diego. Simon also ended the season on a high note, defeating No. 34 Jerry Makowski of Texas A&M.
Fellow freshman Zach Nichols earned a preseason ranking of No. 93 after posting the second-most wins on the team in the fall season with an 8-3 mark. In Nichols' first action at TCU, the Austin, Texas native defeated No. 72 Milan Mihailovic of Texas and No. 61 Dominik Muller of Baylor en route to the quarterfinals of the Baylor Intercollegiate. Nichols also reached the round of 16 at the Wilson/ITA South Central Regional Championships to end the first half of the season.
The doubles tandem of Kriegler Brink and Cotet will enter the 2008 season with a ranking of No. 43. Ranked as high as No. 23 nationally last season, the duo put together a record of 16-4 in 2007.
The Frogs will open the season on Jan. 18 with the three-day Rice Indoor tournament in Houston, Texas.
