Overtime goal upends Cougars in Houston

HOUSTON, Texas - Jackie Torda netted a goal in overtime off an assist from Michelle Nguyen to lift TCU, who played the overtime period with only 10 players, to a 1-0 victory over Houston on Sunday at John O'Quinn field.
TCU (4-6-0) was able to control the tempo of the game with constant pressure on the Cougar defense. The Horned Frogs outshot Houston (4-4-1) for the match, 26-9, tallying 11 shots on goal. On defense, TCU was once again solid between the posts as it recorded a shutout on the day.
"I was very happy that offensively we kept pushing and kept battling today despite all the adversity of that game. I thought Houston played a great game and frustrated us a little, but the kids kept grinding and got the win," said head coach Dan Abdalla.
Early in the first half, sophomore Lizzy Karoly beat a defender into the box and looked to put the Horned Frogs up early, but had her shot blocked by Houston defender Stephanie Booker.
In the 23rd minute, Karoly, who posted five shots on goal for the half, tried to put the ball into the back of the net from 25 yards out, but had her shot saved by Cougar goalkeeper Shelby Scott. Freshman Chelsea Cody followed with a shot of her own, but Scott again stopped the Horned Frogs from getting on the board.
Overall for the half, TCU held a 14-4 shot advantage, including a 7-1 shots on goal difference over Houston. On offense, Karoly and Michelle Nguyen led the Horned Frog attack with Nguyen recording three shots during the period, including one late in the half that was saved by Scott.
The Horned Frogs continued to pressure the Cougars in the second half with a strong offensive performance that produced eight of the first nine shots through the first 30 minutes of the period.
Midway through the second period, Torda, a Colleyville native, took the ball off an assist from Courtney Johnson, but watched as her header sailed high.
In the 72nd minute, Nguyen almost broke the tie, but had her shot blocked by a UH defender. Cody, a freshman from Oklahoma City, Okla., followed with two shots from inside the box, but hit the crossbar and post late in the match.
Finally, Torda secured the TCU win at the 92:01 mark off a free kick by Nguyen.
Overall, Houston native Kelsey Vross recorded the shutout after stopping three saves on the day, while Scott posted nine saves. On offense, Karoly led the Horned Frog attack with nine shots, including six on goal. Torda, who netted her sixth goal of the season, chipped in with six shots.
TCU, who has now played in three overtime matches this fall, improved to 4-6-0 with the win, while Houston dropped to 4-4-1. By posting 26 shots in the match, TCU has now recorded 42 shots in its past two contests.
The match against the Cougars, which was delayed for two hours because of lightening, will be broadcast on Oct. 2 at 9 p.m. on CSTV.
TCU will next be in action on Oct. 3 against Prairie View A&M. Start time is set for 11:30 a.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
