WACO, Texas - Three TCU freshmen recorded two wins to lead the TCU men's tennis team in the opening day of the Baylor Intercollegiate on Friday. Two Horned Frog newcomers upset seeded players in the tournament's main draw.
"I was really pleased with how the guys played today," said TCU head coach Dave Borelli. "We've got a great group of guys and we're getting closer and closer to where we need to be as a program. I was especially happy with the way newcomers Zach Nichols, Casey Powers and Adrian Simon played today."
Simon kicked off the tournament with a bang, upsetting No. 7 Thomas Liversage of San Diego 7-6, 3-6, 7-6. Liversage is currently ranked No. 60 in the fall preseason Fila/ITA collegiate tennis rankings. Simon came out on top in another tough match in the following round, defeating Jakob Klaesson of Ole Miss 7-6(2), 4-6, 7-5 to advance to the round of 16.
Nichols also had a strong start to the tournament. After defeating Janusz Conradi of Louisiana-Lafayette 6-3, 7-5, the Austin, Texas, native knocked off No. 9 Milan Mihailovic of Texas 6-3, 7-6(4). Mihailovic is currently tabbed No. 72 in the preseason Fila/ITA singles ranking.
Powers, another true freshman for the Horned Frogs, scored an opening round victory over James Langford of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by a score of 7-6, 6-3. In the round of 32, Powers triumphed over Luis Campos of Laredo CC 6-4, 7-5.
TCU junior Kriegler Brink fell in the opening round to Baylor's Atilla Bucko 2-6, 6-0, 6-1, but bounced back with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Dimitry Minkin of UT-Arlington in the consolation draw.
Caleb Bulls, a sophomore from Tyler, Texas, defeated Nils Idwal of Lamar 6-2, 6-1 in the opening round before falling 6-1, 6-2 to Roman Orgakov of UT-Arlington in the following round.
Jack Seider and Alex Panayides both dropped their opening round matches and will compete in their third round consolation matches on Saturday.
The TCU doubles teams didn't fare as well on Friday, as all three duos competing dropped their opening round matches.
