FORT WORTH, Texas- Goalkeeper Kelsey Walters stopped five shots on Sunday, including four in the first half, but it wasn't enough as Arizona State snapped TCU's three-match win streak at home with a 2-0 victory at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
Following an Arizona State goal by Kyleyn Felts in the 32nd minute, freshman Jenna Hayes, a Longmont, Colo., native, looked to put the Horned Frogs on the board off an assist from Jackie Torda, but saw her shot saved by Sun Devil goalkeeper Briana Silvestri. Five minutes later, Angie Nickens, who posted two shots in the period, missed another opportunity as she watched her shot sail high.
After the half, Torda, a freshman from Colleyville, connected on a ball from right outside the box, but couldn't put TCU on the board. Three minutes later TCU midfielder Michelle Nguyen tried to tie the ballgame, but had her shot blocked by the Sun Devil defense.
ASU's Lauren Niblett increased the Sun Devil lead to 2-0 off a deflection inside the TCU box midway through the second half. Hayes tried to put TCU on the board late in the contest, but failed to find the back of the net.
Overall, TCU posted seven shots in the match, including four in the second half. The Horned Frogs were led on offense by Hayes and Nickens. The tandem recorded two shots apiece in front of 860 people.
With the loss, TCU moved to 3-3-0 on the season and 3-1-0 at home. ASU improved to 4-2-0 on the season. Horned Frog freshmen Katie Howard, Julia Slater and Nikki Wilbur all saw their first collegiate action against the Pac-10 school.
TCU will be back in action Sept. 21 against SMU. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at Westcott Field in Dallas.
