FORT WORTH--Senior Jenna Lohse scored 10 of her 13 points in the first half, and the TCU defense forced 30 turnovers to lead the Lady Frogs to a 66-36 victory over Delaware Friday in the consolation round of the Preseason WNIT at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.TCU (2-1), which was able to successfully rebound from its first loss of the season last Sunday at No. 4/4 LSU, finished its WNIT run with a 2-1 record, its best all-time showing in two tournament appearances.
The Frogs coasted to victory in the second half after building a 32-15 halftime lead. The squad held Delaware to 23.8 percent shooting in the first half while forcing 19 turnovers in the opening stanza alone. The Hens' final point total tied for the seventh-fewest ever allowed by TCU in a single game.
Friday proved to be an extra special evening for Lohse, as she shot 6-for-8 from the field and registered three rebounds on what was the 6-foot-2 forward's 23rd birthday. Lohse's point total led the Frogs, and it marked her most points in a contest since a 15-point effort last season at San Diego State (Feb. 28).
"What we talked about in practice is staying in one position on the baseline," Lohse said. "That was my main focus. My team did a great job of getting me the ball. It was just a pass and a shot. It wasn't anything totally special that I did, just staying with the game plan."
Freshman Helena Sverrisdottir continued the strong start to her TCU career with 11 points and six assists, a season high for a Lady Frog, all without committing a single turnover. Sophomore Danielle Nunn scored a season-high nine points and grabbed three rebounds, while senior Helen Roden added eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Senior Lorie Butler-Rayford led TCU's efforts on the glass with eight boards.
Junior guard Jamie Mundy paced the Blue Hens with nine points and tied freshman Eva Riddick for the Delaware team lead with seven boards.
TCU took command of the game from the opening tip, outscoring the Delaware 12-4 in the game's first six minutes. Lohse scored six quick points from the low post while hitting each of her first three shots, while the Frog defense drew three offensive foul calls on the defensive end to help force eight early Hen turnovers by the 12:00 mark.
With the Frogs leading 17-6, Delaware raised its defensive level to creep back into the game. The Hens held TCU scoreless for nearly five minutes between the 12:13 and 7:28 marks while putting together a 5-0 run. TCU, which missed eight straight shots during the drought, was able to respond with Lohse's fourth bucket off a dish from senior Adrianne Ross before Butler-Rayford followed with a trey from the left wing. Lohse then struck again with a baseline jumper to extend the lead to 13 at 24-11.
Two free throws by Mundy ended the Hens' scoreless streak, but sophomore Shayla Moore drilled another TCU 3-pointer from the left wing on the ensuing possession to push the lead to 16, 29-13.
TCU continued its assault in the second half, outscoring the Hens 10-2 before the first media break. Roden opened the period with a trey from the left wing on TCU's first possession. Lohse then added yet another layup before Sverrisdottir recorded an old-fashioned 3-point play. Butler-Rayford finished the run with a jumper for a 42-17 advantage.
With the Preseason WNIT behind them, the Lady Frogs continue their non-conference schedule Tuesday with a 7 p.m. contest at SMU.
