FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Horned Frog volleyball squad dropped a heartbreaker Wednesday night to Oklahoma 3-2 (31-29, 25-30, 30-18, 27-30, 15-17), suffering their first home loss of the season. The Frogs had two match points in the contest, but couldn't seal the victory. Devon Kirk led all blockers with a career-high 11, while Kourtney Edwards paced the team offensively with 17 kills.Oklahoma built a 22-17 lead in game one before the Frogs would finally put together a long rally to regain control of the set. Loren Barry took over at the service line and, aided by three straight Sooner errors, served the Frogs within one point, 22-21. Lauren Otto tied the set with a loud kill and another Sooner error gave TCU the lead.
Again, Oklahoma took a late 25-24 lead, but back-to-back kills from LeMeita Smith turned the set into a 26-25 Horned Frog lead.
After the Sooners worked the game to 29-29, Irene Hester gave TCU set point and the Sooners' 15th error of the game sealed the 31-29 victory for TCU.
Oklahoma controlled game two from start to finish, building a nine-point lead at 22-13 late in the set. The Frogs rallied late in the game to gain momentum for the third set.
Again, Barry put the Frogs on her back and rolled off two aces around an Edwards kill. Two straight Sooner errors made it 29-25, but an Anna Stadel kill sent the game to intermission tied at one.
In game three, Oklahoma, again, opened up a big lead only to see the Frogs rally. Christy Hudson dropped in three kills and combined with Devon Kirk on a stuff to tie the game at 11.
With the set tied at 12, Barry's serving gave the Frogs a big lead. Edwards, Hester and Hampton combined to give the Frogs an 18-13 lead. Katelyn Blackwood took over behind the service line and the lead grew to double-digits, 26-16, thanks to two straight aces from Blackwood. An Edwards' kill gave the Frogs the 2-1 match lead.
Game four was a tight affair all the way through. Neither team was able to build much of a lead as they battled through 11 ties and six lead changes. A Francie Ekwerekwu kill broke a 24-24 tie and the Sooners rode that to a 30-27 game four win.
Another exciting set in game five eventually went to the Sooners as they battled back from down 13-11 to win 17-15.
The Frogs took the two-point lead on a kill from Smith and a Sooner error. Oklahoma battled back to tie the game at thirteen, but another attack error gave the Frogs match point. Stadel staved off that point with a kill, but Hester answered to give the Frogs their second match point. After a service error by the Frogs, the Sooners put down two straight kills to take the come-from-behind victory.
Barry finished the match with four aces and 13 digs. Calli Corley led the Frogs with 15 digs in the match. Hester matched her career high with 13 kills and Smith rounded out the Frog attack with 10 kills. Hudson finished with six kills and pitched in with six blocks.
The Frogs fall to 15-6 on the season. They return to conference play Friday night at Utah. Match time is set for 8 p.m. (CST).
