PROVO, Utah (Oct. 5, 2007) - The TCU Horned Frogs dropped a close first set and couldn't recover as the No. 23 BYU Cougars handed the Frogs a 3-0 (27-30, 20-30, 21-30) loss Friday night. Edwards led the Frogs with nine kills on the night. Calli Corley had a team-high 19 digs, moving her into second all-time in career digs.
The Frogs took control of game one early on and continued to hold the lead until late in the set. With the Frogs leading 5-4, they went on an 8-2 run to open up a 12-6 lead. Kills from Devon Kirk, Nirelle Hampton, Lauren Otto and Kourtney Edwards spurred the rally. The run was capped by an Otto ace, prompting a BYU timeout. Out of the break, an attack error by the Cougars Rachel Dyer made it a 13-6 Frog lead.
TCU withstood a Cougar rally that brought them within one, 21-20 and managed to build its lead back to three, 25-22 on kills from Kirk, Smith and a Hampton ace forcing BYU's second timeout.
The break was all the Cougars needed as they went on a 4-0 run to take a 26-25 lead. A Bryn Porter kill on the outside sealed the 30-27 game one win for BYU.
A battle early in the second set played itself out to a 6-6 tie. A 4-0 run by the Cougars opened the game up and they sailed from there. TCU got as close as 12-11 on an Otto kill, but Dyer had an answer to push the lead back to two.
BYU continued to build on its lead, pushing the advantage to six, 19-13. A mini 3-0 run by the Frogs that was helped along by an Otto kill and a Kirk ace was stopped by a Porter kill. The Cougars closed out the game on a 10-4 run to take the commanding 2-0 match lead.
Game three was eerily similar to the second set as it was tight early on and then a big run by the Cougars broke things open. A Kirk kill made it an 11-10 BYU lead, but that was as close as the Frogs would get the rest of the way. The Cougars went on to win the set 30-21 to clinch the victory.
TCU falls to 15-6 on the season and 2-3 in conference play. The Frogs will head to Salt Lake City on Saturday for a meeting with Utah. Match time is set for 8 p.m. (CST)
