
TCU outdistances San Diego State with strong second half

FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU scored 53 points in the second half and almost scored more points in one half than San Diego State did in the whole game, as the Lady Frogs won their 17th consecutive home game with an 83-57 victory over the Aztecs on Sunday at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
TCU (15-6, 5-2 Mountain West Conference) led by eight with 14:54 to play before a pair of free throws by Helen Roden triggered a 33-9 run that extended the Lady Frogs' lead to 32, 71-39, with 6:37 to play.
Utilizing its fast break, TCU made layups on 11 of its first 14 field goals in the second half and outscored San Diego State (9-9, 2-5 MWC) 24-2 on fast-break points. TCU also forced a season-high 28 turnovers and had 14 steals.
"We seemed to have a different gear in that part of the game," head coach Jeff Mittie said. "Our rebounding was good, and we seemed to have a lot of people flying up the floor."
With the win, TCU has now won all four of its conference home games by an average margin of 31.25 points and has won all 12 home games by an average of 19.99 points.
The Lady Frogs shot 55.6 percent in the second half on 20-of-36 shooting and 46 percent for the game. San Diego State connected on 38.0 percent of its shots in the game.
TCU had three players score in double figures, led by Adrianne Ross, who dropped in a game-high 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Roden scored 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting and Ashley Davis scored 10 points. Ross and Davis have now reached double figures in 19 of 21 games this season.
Micaela Younger had a career-high eight rebounds in 15 minutes and was one-point shy of her career high with seven points. JimAnne Hejny also contributed a season-high eight points off the bench.
TCU led 30-22 at the half and extended its record to 11-0 when leading at the half. Both teams shot 33.3 percent in the first frame and Ross led all scorers with eight points.
Trailing 10-8 with 13:13 to play in the first half, a pair of free throws by Micaela Younger free throws sparked an 11-1 run to give TCU a 19-11 lead. During TCU's run, San Diego State was held without a field goal from 13:48-7:30 (6:18).
San Diego State was able to cut back into the Lady Frogs' lead and got within four at 23-19 before TCU used a 7-0 run to take a 30-19 lead. SDSU scored the final three points of the half and TCU took a 30-22 lead at the half.
Both teams started the game sluggish with five turnovers apiece by the time of the first media timeout at 14:28.
San Diego State was led by Jennifer Layton, who scored 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting.
TCU will return to the hardwood at 8 p.m. on Feb. 1 against BYU in Provo, Utah. The game will be televised on CSTV and will mark the first of three straight road games for the Lady Frogs.
