Recap | Final Stats | Notes
TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson
Opening Statement...
"I can tell you what I told the players in the locker room, you have to give BYU all the credit. For some reason, this program does not know how to handle success. Last year, we beat an Oklahoma team and came back and lost to SMU. This year, we beat Texas Tech and look what happened tonight. This ball game was the most important game on our schedule up until this point. However, I don't think you can take anything away from Coach (Bronco) Mendenhall. They worked on a short week, came in here and got after us. I think five or six times, we had them third and long and we let them out the second half. If you can't play in third and long, and we can't play third and short on offense, we aren't going to win many football games."
On what he told his players in the locker room...
"We have an even tougher ball game this next week, going into Salt Lake City and someone else's backyard. If we play like that, we're not going to (win). I do think you have to give BYU credit. They did a great job. They were more physical than us tonight and that doesn't happen many times at Amon G. Carter Stadium. We didn't tackle, so there is nothing else I can really tell you."
On the offense...
"It was the same thing as SMU last year. Five times we're in the red zone and you don't score any points - you're not going to win ballgames. We've been doing this all year. We have to quit killing ourselves inside the 20. When you get down there against good teams, you have to put touchdowns on the board. We played probably the best game you could play two weeks ago, but you can't put all the blame on the offense. Our freshmen corners caught up with us a little bit tonight."
On moving on...
"I am a pretty good person to close the door and go on. We've done it every time we've played before. Last year, we had to come off that loss (to SMU) and come back and play Utah here. The difference is we have to go play and do what BYU did tonight. We have to be able to go to somebody else's house and win. You don't want to be 0-2 in the conference. It's going to be tough to make that up. The bottom line to it is, you have to go find a way to win."
TCU Quarterback Jeff Ballard
How does this loss affect the team's long-term goals...
"It does impact us, but one of our goals is to win the Mountain West Conference, and with one loss, we can still do that. We just have to take it one game at a time."
On his first loss as a starter...
"Anytime you lose you feel like that. You just have to bounce back and come back next week and get the win."
TCU Safety David Roach
On giving up third and longs...
"It was (because of a lack of) focus. Not everyone was focusing. It all comes down to little things, and we didn't get them done."
On the effect of the loss on TCU's long-term goals...
"It impacts us. As much as it hurts we have to put it behind us. Our goal was to win a national championship and that will be hard to do, so our next goal will just be winning."
BYU Head Coach Bronco Mendenhall
On TCU gaining yards but not points...
"We didn't feel TCU could execute long enough, consistent enough and be patient enough. That last drive when they scored seven points, took up a lot of time and that's what we asked the players to do."
On BYU QB John Beck...
"He was outstanding. It was a courageous performance and a gutty performance. It's the mark of a great leader and a great quarterback."
On where this win ranks for BYU...
"It's the most significant win I've had since I've been head coach, and maybe the best of my career. Just in terms of the responsibilities I've been given and the team performing in the manner, and the circumstances which can't be understated. I couldn't be more proud of them."
