LINCOLN, Neb. - Dealing with temperatures in the 60s and a stiff headwind in the first half, the TCU soccer team allowed three first-half goals en route to a 4-0 loss at Nebraska on Sunday at the Nebraska Soccer Field.
In what was just the second loss in its last six matches, TCU (4-4-0) was outshot 23-8 by Nebraska (5-1-2). Lizzy Karoly led the Horned Frogs with three shots, while Chelsea White had two shots.
In what proved to be a decisive first half, the Huskers took advantage of the wind at their back by tallying three goals, outshooting the Horned Frogs 16-2 and attempting seven corner kicks compared to zero by TCU.
"We panicked with the style Nebraska played early on," head coach Dan Abdalla said. "We got sucked into a fast-paced game very quickly and we played right to Nebraska's style."
Despite trailing 3-0 at the half, TCU settled down in the second half and continued to battle through the match. TCU was able to clampdown on defense in the second half, only allowing one goal and seven shots.
"Eventually, we were able to make the necessary adjustments in the second half and slow the pace of the game down," Abdalla said. "We were able to spread Nebraska out a little better and not allow them to get behind our defenders."
The loss continued TCU's strong correlation between goals scored and wins and losses this season. TCU is 4-0 this season when the Horned Frogs score a goal and 0-4 when they fail to score.
Nebraska was able to score first with 17:21 to play in the first half, as Jessie Bruch took full advantage of the wind by letting a shot fly from 40 yards out that carried past goalkeeper Katy Buchanan. Bruch was assisted on the play by Jessie Goodell.
Nebraska took a two-goal advantage at the 27:12 mark off the foot of Brittany Timko, who fired a wind-aided shot from 35 yards out that cleared Buchanan.
The Huskers' third goal of the game came at the 35:16 mark, as Sari Raber scored on a rebound after Buchanan had saved a shot by Bruch off a corner kick.
Nebraska's final goal came from Timko at the 56:59 mark. Timko was able to beat goalkeeper Kelsey Vross, who replaced Buchanan at the half. Timko was assisted by Bruch.
Buchanan fell to 4-3 in goal, as she tallied two saves in the first half. Vross made three saves in the second half.
TCU returns to action on Thursday as the Horned Frogs host SMU at 7 p.m. TCU's match between the Mustangs will be video streamed on GoFrogs.com and can also be heard 88.7 KTCU.
