TCU volleyball sweeps Loyola in season opener

FORT WORTH, Texas - There was no hint of first-match jitters Friday afternoon, as the TCU volleyball team (1-0) rolled to a three-game sweep (30-12, 30-21, 30-12) over Loyola (Md.) (0-1) in the 2006-07 season opener at the University Rec Center. TCU, who is hosting four other teams for the TCU Molen/LaQuinta Invitational, continues tournament play Friday evening as the Frogs take on South Carolina at 7:30 p.m.
The victory marked the first time since 2003 that the Horned Frogs opened the year with a win.
"In general, it was a perfect first match for us," fifth-year head coach Prentice Lewis said. "I was pleased with the aspect that the players brought in things that we asked them to do in match situations."
The Horned Frogs hit a stellar .377, led by redshirt-freshman Kourtney Edwards who paced the squad with six kills on seven attempts for an .857 hitting percentage.
"The player of the game was definitely Kourtney Edwards," Lewis said. "She had a great match, hitting .857 with three block assists."
Junior LeMeita Smith and senior Anna Vaughn recorded double-figure kills for TCU, logging 12 and 10 each, respectively, to lead the team in hitting.
Emily Allen, returning from a knee-injury that caused her to miss last season, made a strong debut with 11 kills, two aces, and five digs. She also added a block solo and block assist for 14.5 points.
Senior libero Calli Corley poured in a strong defensive performance with a match-high 13 digs.
"Calli was all over the place digging balls for us," Lewis stated.
Junior Nirelle Hampton led all players with a respective four aces in the match. TCU totaled 12 aces in the match, receiving three from Loren Barry and two each from Allen and Corley.
Playing scrappy defense, the Horned Frogs held the Greyhounds to a -.033 hitting percentage and 22.0 points.
Rachel Schillinger paced Loyola with seven kills.
