FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs matched their best start in school history as they improved to 4-0 on the young season. They closed out the tournament a 3-1 (30-21, 17-30, 30-24, 30-22) win over Boise State in the final game of the TCU Molten/LaQuinta Invitational. The Frogs were led by tournament MVP Anna Vaughn and Lauren Otto's 15 kills. Defensively, Calli Corley picked up a match-high 24 digs."We played really good," remarked head Coach Prentice Lewis. "From the aspect of getting the team to believe that they can be successful, this was a great weekend for us. They already have great chemistry and I didn't doubt we would have a good showing this weekend. I had anticipated it and it is a great feeling to see it actually happen."
An outstanding effort in game one got the Frogs started off on the right foot. They hit at a .310 clip and were paced by Vaughn's eight kills. The Frogs controlled the momentum the entire way, jumping out to a 10-3 lead. The Broncos struggled to get into the game, hitting just .108 in the contest as errors helped the Frogs increase their lead. A Vaughn service ace put the Frogs up 1-0 in the match.
"Anna did a great job this weekend," Lewis said. "She was hitting well and blocking and getting touches on a lot of balls, helping slow them down off the block. I was very happy with her play. She did a fantastic job."
The Broncos rebounded and tied the match at one apiece. They improved their hitting as they recorded 16 kills in the game versus just five errors for a .289 percentage. Cameron Flunder led the Boise attack as she poured in five kills. Conversely, the Frogs hitting declined in game two as they hit just .139.
TCU regained the momentum in the third game as they took the 2-1 lead. Serving and accurate hitting helped the Frogs gain control in the back-and-forth game. Otto picked up three service aces in the game to go along with six kills. Her third ace of the game sealed the 30-24 win.
Boise State couldn't get the momentum to shift back to their side as they hit a -.082 in the final game. The Frogs used a great blocking effort in the match to seal the match victory. Solo blocks by Otto and Vaughn ignited the offense. An attack error by the Broncos ended the match, giving the Frogs the 3-1 victory.
Otto picked up her second double-double of the season with 15 kills and 13 digs. Emily Allen pitched in nine kills, 12 digs and four total blocks. Kourtney Edwards continued her outstanding play with six kills and five total blocks. Loren Barry pitched in 14 digs and helped the Frogs to victory with her strong serving ability.
Emily Allen and Lauren Otto were the Frogs representatives on the all-tournament squad.
The Frogs will hit the road for five straight matches. A midweek contest against UT-Arlington on Tuesday will see the Frogs go for their best-ever start in school history. Match time is set for 7 p.m. in Arlington.
