FORT WORTH, Texas -- Odessa College All-American Helen Roden, a 5-foot-8 guard, has inked a National Letter of Intent to play for the TCU Lady Frogs in 2006-07, head coach Jeff Mittie has announced.
Roden, who will be a junior this fall, collected numerous postseason honors after leading the Lady Wranglers to a 34-1 record and a berth in the 2006 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I championship game. She was named Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) MVP, All-Region 5 and first-team All-America in addition to being the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) Junior College Women's Player of the Year. For the year, she averaged 15.1 points, 7.9 assists and 2.5 steals.
"I think Helen will be a great addition to our guard group," Mittie said. "She has the ability to play the `1' and the `2' positions. Helen gained valuable experience playing for Nate Altenhofen and ultimately helped lead Odessa to the National Junior College championship game. We look forward to getting her on campus."
As a freshman in 2004-05, Roden led the team with 13.1 points and 4.8 assists per game. She received all-WJCAC honors for the league tournament runners-up as well.
Roden hails from Melbourne, Australia, where she attended Penola Catholic. She has been selected to play for the Australian Under-21 Women's Basketball Team, which is training this summer for the 2007 World Championships in Guatemala.
Roden received interest from more than 100 NCAA Division I programs, and ultimately selected TCU over Temple and Oklahoma State.
