FORT WORTH, Texas -- The No. 32 TCU Horned Frogs recorded a 4-3 victory over No. 13 LSU to record their sixth-straight victory. Senior Jordan Freitas recorded wins at doubles No. 1 and at singles No. 5.
The Tigers got to a quick start over the Frogs by grabbing two of the three matches in doubles play. The team of Kevin Dessauer and Paul White got the Tigers going strong by getting out to a 5-2 lead over the TCU team of Cosmin Cotet and Andrei Mlendea. Cotet and Mlendea made a rally and brought it back to within reach, but could not overcome the early deficit and ended up falling to the Tigers 8-5.
The No. 1 seed for the Horned Frogs, Rafael Abreu and Freitas, grabbed a magnificent victory over the No. 17 team of Mark Growcott and Ken Skupski. The match was back and forth until the Horned Frogs broke an LSU serve and got the lead in the eighth game. The game ended in deuce after Freitas served an ace to get the advantage and then got the win on the next serve.
The last doubles match went down to the wire between the TCU team of Jacopo Tezza and Kriegler Brink versus the Tigers team of Danny Bryan and Colt Gaston. The Frogs got out to an early 6-3 lead, but could not hang on to the lead as the Tigers came roaring back to capture the doubles point with a 9-7 victory over the Frogs.
In singles play, LSU came out strong when Bryan took the first match of the afternoon 6-0 and 6-3 over Cotet. The match gave the Tigers a 2-0 match lead. The Frogs rebounded when Freitas captured the first win in two sets over the Tigers' James Cluskey.
The Frogs won the next three matches to clinch the victory over the higher-ranked LSU. Tezza battled off a White comeback in the second game by serving an ace for the win and won the match 6-2, 6-4.
Brink and Mlendea then recorded back-to-back victories over Martel Campbell and Growcott. Brink won 7-6, 6-3 and Mlendea won his match 7-5, 6-4. The last match of the day was between Abreu and Skupski that went three sets ending in a 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 Skupski victory.
The Frogs return to action on Tuesday when they host South Alabama. Match time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
