FORT WORTH, Texas--The No. 32 TCU men's tennis team extended its win streak to five straight, defeating the 70th-ranked Denver Pioneers, 4-0, Friday night at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. With the win, the Horned Frogs brought the Pioneers four-game win streak to an end.
The Frogs took an early 1-0 lead by sweeping their doubles matches. Competing at the No. 1 spot, the duo of Rafael Abreu and Jordan Freitas made quick work of Denver's Adam Holmstrom and Niklas Persson, winning 8-2. Soon after, the tandem of Cosmin Cotet and Andrei Mlendea took down the Pioneers' Viktor Zetterholm and Alijosa Nipic 8-6 to secure the doubles point for TCU.
Kriegler Brink and Jacopo Tezza completed the doubles sweep over Steve Flaks and Nejc Smole. After trailing 6-4, Brink and Tezza rallied even the match 8-8 before winning the tie-breaker 9-7.
Frietas gave the Frogs their second point of the night with a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Flaks at the No. 5 spot. Cotet quickly added a third point for TCU at the No. 3 seed, taking down Denver's Persson in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
After taking the first set 6-1, Mlendea clinched the match for the Frogs in brilliant fashion, acing Smole to preserve TCU's undefeated spring season.
The match, originally scheduled for 6 p.m., was postponed to a 7 p.m. start due to inclement weather. Consequently, the remainder of the singles contests did not finish after the Frogs clinched the match, 4-0.
TCU returns to action at noon on Sunday as it hosts the No. 15 LSU Tigers.
