Colorado Springs, Colo. - The TCU women swimmers and divers triumphed over Air Force and New Mexico State 63-50, 75-38, respectively, Thursday night to move to 6-2, 1-2 on the season. The men dropped to 2-2, 0-2 as they fell to a tough Air Force team 142.50-91.50.
"Overall, we swam pretty well tonight," said TCU head swimming coach Richard Sybesma. "The Air Force men are an awfully good team, with six outstanding seniors."
On the women's side, senior Erica Tate continued her dominance in the 50-free event, taking the win in a time of 24.19. Tate is currently undefeated in the event on the season.
The Frogs took the top two spots in the 200-fly, as Stephanie Futscher recorded her sixth win of the season in a time of 2:10.34, followed by junior Michelle Pottenger. Pottenger's twin sister, Maribeth, earned the win in the 200-breast, with a time of 2:23.59.
Freshman Jennifer Ferguson moved to 8-0 in her collegiate career with her fourth sweep of the diving events on the season. In the one-meter, Ferguson recorded a score of 285.75 in six dives, while slating a 303.75 in the three-meter, the school's fifth-highest score. Ferguson is now responsible for the third, fourth and fifth-best scores in the three-meter dive in TCU history.
The women also earned a win in the first event of the night, the 400-medley, with a time of 4:01.50. The winning team included Keleigh Wentworth, Maribeth Pottenger, Natalie Melenric and Meredith Grubb.
Senior Guillermo Ramirez had another impressive showing for the men on Thursday night. The Cali, Colombia, native cruised to victory in the 200-back (1:52.21), followed by junior Jonathon Berrettini.
Also earning wins for the Frogs were Scott McCracken and Alejandro Gomez. McCracken took the 50-free in 21.33, while Gomez swam to victory in the 500-free event (4:47.39). Senior Aran Bean was another Frog with an impressive performance, as he fell just short in the 200-breast event, taking second in a time of 2:10.31.
"I think Aran Bean, Guillermo Ramirez and Scott McCracken really stepped up and performed well tonight," said Sybesma.
In the men's diving events, sophomore R.J. Hesselberg, the program's only male diver, won the three-meter in easy fashion with a score of 291.00, almost twenty-five points ahead of the next competitor.
The next action for the Frogs will take place Saturday, as the men and women will travel to Laramie to face Wyoming at noon.
