FORT WORTH, Texas - Playing their third straight ranked opponent this week, the TCU Horned Frogs came up short as they dropped a 3-0 (30-22, 30-25, 30-20) decision to No. 18 BYU Saturday night at the University Rec Center. In her last career home game, senior Anna Vaughn led the Frog attack with eight kills. Lauren Otto paced a Frog serving attack that recorded nine aces in the match with four.An early deficit 6-1 deficit faced the Frogs in game one and it proved to be the deciding factor as TCU could never clear the hump and get the game tied. After falling behind, the Frogs attempted to climb back in the match with mini runs, but the Cougars continued to build on their lead, extending it out to 16-10.
TCU mounted its biggest rally of the match to get within three, 17-10, thanks to a Vaughn ace and kills from Nirelle Hampton and Edwards. BYU called a timeout to kill the Frog momentum. Lindsy Hartsock rolled off six straight points on her serve and despite three straight aces from Otto, the Frogs couldn't overcome the deficit. BYU claimed the game one victory by a score of 30-22.
After falling behind in game two, the Frogs battled back behind the serving of Emily Allen. Kills from LeMeita Smith, a Vaughn and Smith denial and two kills by Hampton helped the Frogs build a 9-5 advantage.
The Cougars responded with a five-point run of their own to regain a 10-9 lead. A back-and-forth affair ensued before BYU broke a 13-all tie to claim a 19-14 lead. Janvier Beaumont keyed the rally as she strung together six straight points on her serve.
Again, the Frogs battled back to pull within one with help from a Kourtney Edwards blast and a Hampton ace. The rally was capped by an Otto kill forcing a Cougar timeout. The timeout ended the Frogs run and the Cougars closed out the set on an 11-7 run, taking the 30-25 game two win.
TCU got out to the early lead in game three, but the Cougars were too tough to handle as they quickly regained the advantage. An Allen and Edwards block on the outside gave the Frogs a 7-5 lead and Allen made it 8-6 with a loud kill off the block.
After a Frog hitting error, Amy Schlauder got the Cougars rolling, tallying eight points on her serve, helping the Cougars build a 15-9 lead. A late rally by the Frogs that featured back-to-back blocks, one from Allen and Edwards, then a solo from Edwards got the game within eight, but that was as close as they would come. Schlauder served up an ace to seal the victory for the Cougars, 30-20.
The Frogs (17-12, 5-9 MWC) will head to Albuquerque, N.M. for their only match of the week when they square off against New Mexico. Match time is slated for 8 p.m. (CST).
