TCU plays to 0-0 draw with New Mexico

FORT WORTH, Texas - For the second Sunday in a row, TCU played its opponent to a draw with a 0-0 tie against New Mexico at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium.
Both squads had multiple opportunities to get on the board, but the Horned Frogs (5-6-2, 0-1-1 MWC) came the closest with both Michelle Nguyen and Karissa Hill firing shots that caromed off of the crossbar.
"We played an uninspired match today," head coach Dan Abdalla said. "Give credit to New Mexico for the way they defended us and battled with us. We just didn't step up when the opportunity presented itself today."
New Mexico (6-4-3, 0-0-2 MWC), who has now had draws in three consecutive matches, outshot TCU 23-8. Despite the Lobos outshooting the Horned Frogs, TCU goalkeeper Katy Buchanan was kept the Lobos off the board. Buchanan played the entire match and tied her career high with nine saves. It is the fourth time in her career she has made nine stops.
TCU's first scoring chance of the game came with 5:30 to play in the first period, as Nguyen wound up and fired a shot from 30 yards out that struck the right side of the crossbar. After a scrum for the ball in the box, New Mexico was able to gain possession and clear it.
Prior to Nguyen's shot, Buchanan fended off two New Mexico scoring threats by making a diving stop and clearing a loose ball. With 30:22 to play in the first period, Buchanan cleared a would-be scoring opportunity by Kristine Sweat after Sweat had received a cross from Katelyn Ley.
Buchanan again came up big with 23:50 to play in the first period with diving stop on a shot by Kaela Kelly, who one-timed a pass from Sweat.
After being outshot 11-2 in the first half, TCU's offense had a few early scoring opportunities in the second half. One of TCU's opportunities came with 40:35 to play in the half, as Hill took a shot that drilled the crossbar on the leftside of the goal.
Throughout the match, both squads were able to keep the opposing team's strikers from getting any breakaway opportunities. New Mexico's aggressive defensive play kept the ball away from Lizzy Karoly and Chelsea White for the majority of the match.
In both overtime periods, Nguyen had a shot that was stopped by New Mexico's goalkeeper Shannon Adragna, including a diving save with 8:02 remaining in the second overtime.
For the match, Nguyen led TCU with four shots, including three on goal.
New Mexico's best scoring opportunity in overtime came with 5:45 to play in the second overtime, as Kelly had a diving header off a corner kick that flew just wide of the net.
TCU returns to the field on Oct. 13, when Mountain West foe Wyoming visits Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium for a 7 p.m. match.
