TCU and Boise State play to 1-1 draw

BOISE, Idaho - Exactly one year ago TCU topped Boise State in overtime, but on Sunday neither TCU (5-5-1) or Boise State (5-4-1) were able to push across a goal in two overtime periods as the Horned Frogs and Broncos played to a 1-1 draw at the Boise State Soccer Stadium.
With Boise State scoring at the 54:38 mark to take a 1-0 lead, TCU was able to even the match with 4:07 to play, as Lizzy Karoly fired a shot from the right side of the box that cleared over the finger tips of Boise State's goalkeeper Kim Parker who was unable to get a handle on the ball as it drifted into the left side of the net. Karoly's goal was her fifth of the season and third in two games.
In last season's meeting TCU and Boise State were also unable to settle the match in the 90 minutes of regulation with TCU taking a 1-0 win in overtime. Sunday's overtime match was the first for the Horned Frogs since last year's meeting with the Broncos. Boise State was playing its second double overtime match in a row.
Last year, former Horned Frog Bjarnveig Birgisdottir scored just 16 seconds into overtime to give TCU a 1-0 win. Birgisdottir was assisted by Caroline Starns and Angie Nickens on the goal.
On Sunday, the Broncos were able to get the first score on the board at the 35:23 mark as Molly McDonald was able to recover a loose ball in the box following a corner kick and place it past Kelsey Vross, who replaced Katy Buchanan in goal in the second half.
TCU's first scoring opportunity in overtime came with 8:35 to play in the first overtime, Michelle Nguyen crossed a perfect corner kick to Sara Schneider whose header was stopped by a diving Boise State goalkeeper Kim Parker.
After just attempting three shots in the first half, TCU's offense began to come alive in the second half with more opportunities from the start with the Horned Frogs taking two shots in the first five minutes of play.
With 29 minutes to play, Boise State had an ample scoring opportunity that was negated by Vross, who came out of the box to stop Brennan Lau who was wide open on the left side of the box after just receiving a cross.
Less than a minute after Boise State's goal, Karoly used her speed to dribble past Bronco defenders and into the box before Boise State's goalkeeper Kim Parker was able to stop Karoly's attack.
The match was a defensive battle for the first 45 minutes of the match with Boise State taking seven shots and TCU attempting three. Both squads also had two shots on goal.
Boise State had an opportunity to notch the first goal of the match with 38:31 to play in the first half. TCU goalkeeper Katy Buchanan came out of the box to clear a ball, but the Broncos' Kristin Hall beat her to the ball and dribbled to the side of the box and fired a shot that was wide and high of the net.
With 30 minutes to play in the frame, TCU had its best scoring opportunity of the match, as Lizzy Karoly had a breakaway and got to the box before being slide tackled with the Broncos taking possession.
TCU outshot the Broncos 14-12 for the match.
TCU returns home to play No. 15/18 BYU on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium.
