TCU dominated from start to finish in the first match of the Molten/Fort Worth Plaza Invitational, defeating Maine in three games (30-19, 30-22, 30-21) to extend its winning streak to seven matches. Sophomore Loren Barry led the impressive back row play of the Frogs with 18 digs, including three pancakes."We are very excited that Loren [Barry] stepped up while playing libero for us", said associate head coach Jason Tanaka. "When she is back there, we are able to run our offense efficiently. It was an all around team effort and we were in good rhythm with our offense."
Junior Anna Vaughn was especially efficient, hitting .588 with 11 kills.
The Frogs built a 16-point lead before taking the game 30-19. Junior Calli Corley blasted two aces as part of an 8-2 TCU run to start the match, prompting Maine to take a timeout. The short intermission did not slow momentum as the home team refused to relinquish the pressure.
Sophomore Talaya Whitfield started her third match at outside hitter, striking four kills in the opening session and digging one ball. Anna Vaughn, LeMeita Smith and Nirelle Hampton combined for nine of the 15 Horned Frog kills in the first match.
Barry got into the action early with several pancake digs and relentless hustle. She tallied 14 digs through two games and also got into the offensive action with two aces.
After taking a 2-0 lead in the match, the Frogs continued to combine offensive pressure with great defense to take game three 30-21.
Smith finished second on the team in kills with eight and Whitfield was one behind.
With the win, the Frogs improved to 7-2 on the season. The team will play its second match of the tournament on Saturday against Campbell. Match time is slated for 1 p.m.
