Frogs suffer loss to New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Sophomore Talaya Whitfield was one dig away from recording her sixth double-double (10 kills, 9 digs) of the season as the TCU volleyball team fell in three games (20-30, 21-30, 16-30) to the New Mexico Lobos Friday night at the Johnson Center.
Freshman Devon Kirk contributed early for the Frogs, leading the team with four kills in game one. Senior Erin Estep and sophomore LeMeita Smith recorded three kills each. Despite the efforts from the young Frogs, New Mexico was able to build a lead and take the game, 30-20.
Whitfield switched to outside hitter after starting the match at libero and her presence was felt quickly. The Lakewood, Calif., product blasted seven kills while hitting .385. Sophomore Loren Barry made an excellent transition to libero and picked up four digs in the game. Similar to game one, New Mexico built a lead that it did not relinquish and went into the locker room with a 2-0 match lead.
With the Oct. 8 match versus the Frogs at the University Rec Center still fresh on the Lobos mind that saw the Purple and White storm back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the match. New Mexico put away TCU in the third game.
Kirk finished the match with nine kills, tying her career-high.
With the loss, TCU fell to 15-12 overall. The team will play its final match of the weekend on Sunday at Air Force. Match time is slated for 2 p.m. (CDT).
