SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The TCU Horned Frogs dropped a 1-0 decision at Utah in their Mountain West conference opener. After battling to a 0-0 tie in the first half, a late goal in second frame stood as the gamewinner, ending the Frogs two-game winning streak. K.D. Waters was the offensive star, with three of the Frogs six shots on the night. Buchanan made six stops in the loss.
The first real scoring opportunity went the way of the Utes as they took advantage of a clear off a TCU corner kick. The Utah forwards stayed back and broke free with a two-on-one against the Frog defense. K.D. Waters played a strong defense, forcing Michelle Deatherage to take a shot that went well wide of the net.
Katy Buchanan passed her first test of the night on a cross angle shot from Katy Reineke. Her shot was right on the money, but Buchanan was there for the stop.
The Utes kept up the offensive pressure forcing the Frog forwards to move up to play defense, limiting the Frogs chances on offense. Buchanan was a brick wall in goal for the Frogs, thwarting the Utes numerous scoring chances. The Frogs were unable to get any offense going in the first half as they were outshot 11-0 in the first half. Buchanan improved her shutout streak to 246:33, picking up four saves in the first half.
The second half started better for the Frogs as they started to run some offensive plays and got the ball deep in their offensive zone. Where in the first half the Frogs were losing the 50/50 balls, TCU began to get a head on them.
The tenacity paid off as they ripped off their first shot on the goal. Caroline Starns battled with her defender earning the Frogs a free kick. Always dangerous with the free kicks, Waters blasted a shot towards the goal on the direct kick. The luck of last week stayed with the Frogs as her strong shot rang off the crossbar and out of danger.
The Frogs kept up the offensive pressure as they closed the gap in shots, outshooting the Utes 6-4 in the first half of the second frame. The Utes were able to withstand the pressure and finally capitalized in the 85th minute. The Frogs were whistled for the foul about 30 yards out and to the left of the goal. Reineke took the direct kick and belted it over Buchanan's head for the 1-0 lead. For Buchanan that ended her shutout streak at 277:10.
TCU falls to 5-5 on the season and 0-1 in MWC play with the loss. The Frogs will south to Provo for a meeting with the No. 6 BYU Cougars on Saturday night. Match time is set for 7:00 at South Stadium on the BYU campus.
