
Tennis prepares for ITA Regionals

FORT WORTH, Texas -- After a successful showing during the fall season, the TCU men's tennis team heads to College Station, Texas this weekend to compete in the ITA Regionals.
The season began with Craig Stopa and Andrew Ulrich competing in the Collin Open Tournament. Both athletes advanced to the semifinals with Stopa defeating Patrick Painter from UT-Tyler along his way and Ulrich knocked off Sarnon Samii of Collin.
The Frogs traveled to Baylor to compete in the Baylor Invitational. Radu Barbu had a strong showing on his way to a semifinals appearance. He drew No. 1 Lars Poerschke of the host institution, in a match that was tight throughout with plenty of amazing shots Barbu fell 6-4, 6-2.
Barbu then paired with Jordan Freitas to compete in doubles play. After a play-in victory over Buksik/Vasquez of Texas-Arlington, the duo fell to the tandem of McCaid/Rasmussen (8-1) from Santa Clara.
At the All-American Qualifying, Rafael Abreu defeated California's Daniel Sebescen in the first round and MTSU's Andreas Silijestrem in the second, both in straight sets, to move to move on to the third round. In the round, Abreu faced Sam Chang of Florida State. Abreu fell in the match (7-6(2), 4-6, 6-3).
Battling his way to a semifinals appearance, Abreu had an impressive showing at the Midland Invite this past weekend. Along his way, Abreu knocked off Venns from Texas (4,3) and Farqueson of UT-Arlington (4,2).
Freitas posted a 2-1 record at the Midland Invite with wins over Pollock (7-6, 6-3) of Texas A&M and Werbeck of Boise State (7-5, 6-1).
The fall season is reaching its final stretch with the ITA Regionals beginning on Thursday. The Horned Frogs look to finish as strong as they started this season and head into the spring season with valuable experience gained in fall competition.
