Killeen, Pigg Open Play in 104th U.S. Amateur

MAMARONECK, N.Y. - A pair of TCU golfers, senior J.J. Killeen and junior Drew Pigg, as well as 310 other competitors have now completed the first round of play at the 104th U.S. Amateur at historic Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y. After 18 holes, Killeen is currently tied for 120th place, while Pigg is 283rd among the 312-player field. Monday's play was suspended in the evening due to lightning, forcing the final 36 players to complete their opening rounds on Tuesday morning. Killeen, who last year reached the round of 16 at the U.S. Amateur, opened with a double-bogey, then recorded three consecutive pars before finishing his front nine with five straight bogeys. He then played the back nine of the East Course (6,760 yards, par 70) at even-par to land a score of 77 (+7). Killeen is scheduled to tee off Tuesday's round at 7:31 a.m. (CT) on the West Course. Killeen was a second-team All-Conference USA performer and helped TCU win its fourth straight league title and place 20th at the NCAA Championships last year. He is making his third appearance at the U.S. Amateur (2000, 2003, 2004). Pigg's 14-over-par round of 84 came on the West Course (7,266 yards, par 70). He had five double-bogeys on Monday morning, four of which came on par 4s. This is the second straight U.S. Amateur appearance for Pigg (Plano, Texas/Plano West H.S.), who will start Tuesday's second round at 11:24 (CT) on the East Course. The junior appeared in two tournaments for the Frogs last year and has played in five events during his two-year TCU career. Winged Foot has hosted four U.S. Opens (1929, '59, '74 and '84); two Women's U.S. Opens (1957 and '72); one PGA Championship (1997); the inaugural U.S. Senior Open (1984); one Walker Cup match (1948) and one U.S. Amateur (1940). The West Course will be played each day of the event, while the club's East Course will also be used during the two days of stroke play. The USGA accepted 7,356 entries for the 2004 U.S. Amateur. Sectional qualifying was conducted over 36 holes at 100 sites from July 21-August 3 to finalize the field. Following Tuesday's second and final round of stroke play, the field will be cut to the low 64 amateurs. Currently, the cut line for the 64-player field is projected to be eight-over par for the two days. Those 64 players will then compete in a match play elimination tournament until the championship, which will take place on Sunday, August 22.
