FORT WORTH, TexasTCU's Rafael Abreu and Fabrizio Sestini were named Co-Conference USA Men's Tennis Athletes of the Month Thursday, the league office announced. For Sestini, it was the fourth consecutive month dating back to last year that he claimed at least a share of the award. His streak began in October 2003 and continued when he picked up the honors for September, October and November of this year.
Abreu and Sestini competed in doubles at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships for the second year in a row in early November. They defeated Ivan Carrasco and Ricardo Omana from the College of Santa Fe (N.M.) by an 8-2 score in the first round. Carrasco and Omana were the champions of the ITA Small College Championships in October.
In the quarterfinals, they narrowly lost to No. 34-ranked Scott Green and Ross Wilson from Ohio State by a 9-8(6) score. Abreu and Sestini fell behind 3-0 in the tiebreaker but managed to come back and actually had a match point leading 6-5. Green and Wilson went on to win the event.
Abreu and Sestini were the first TCU duo to make consecutive appearances at the indoors since Ashley Fisher/Jason Weir-Smith and Paul Robinson/David Roditi in 1995 and 1996 (Robinson and Roditi also competed in 1994). They were also the first Horned Frogs to win a match at the event since 1998.
TCU's top tandem ended the fall as the No. 2-ranked doubles team in the South Central Region. Sestini was ranked No. 3 in singles for the region as well.
