Frogs Head To Michigan For ITA National Indoors

Fort Worth, Texas - The TCU women's tennis team will compete in tournaments in Arizona and Michigan this weekend to wrap up the fall portion of its schedules. Senior Story Tweedie-Yates and junior Helena Besvoic will travel to Ann Arbor to compete in the ITA National Indoor Championships on Nov. 4-7. Eight players will head to Tempe to compete in the six-team ASU Thunderbird Invitational.
On Thursday, Tweedie-Yates will open play against Karin Coetzee of Wake Forest, who is No. 12 in the ITA rankings. Tweedie-Yates, who is ranked No. 59, enters the competition with a 10-1 fall record with four of her last five wins coming against players ranked among the top 41 in the country.
Besovic opens the tournament against the No. 1 seed in Audra Cohen of Northwestern. Cohen, a freshman on the Wildcats squad, is 20-0 this season with three tournament titles including the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. In each final, Cohen has defeated her teammate, Christelle Grier, who was the No. 1 player in the nation heading into the fall.
Besovic leads the Frogs with a 15-2 mark on the season with wins over six ranked opponents. In the ITA Southwest Regional, the junior dropped only one set in the event en route to winning the regional.
With Tweedie-Yates and Besovic competing in the National Indoors, it marks the first time in TCU history that two players have qualified for the event. Additionally, it is only the second time ever that a Horned Frog women's player has competed in the Indoor Championship. Rene Simpson qualified during the 1988 season where she won her opening round match.
The ITA National Indoor Championships is the second of three national tournaments during the 2004-05 collegiate tennis season. The first was the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships held in Pacific Palisades, Calif., in October. The final tournament will be the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., May.
Heading to Arizona for the Frogs will be seniors Paige Brown and Karla Mancinas, junior Gloriann Lopez, and freshmen Kewa Nichols, Andrea Morgado, Melissa Bere, Lindsay McBride and Alexandra Allin to compete in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational at the Whiteman Tennis Center on Nov. 5-7.
The tournament will showcase some of the most competitive and highly ranked women's singles and doubles players from around the country. The six-team field includes players from Arizona State, California, Kansas State, Michigan, TCU and the 2004 National Champions, Stanford.
