Rubinson, Team USA Set For Walker Cup

FORT WORTH, Texas - Adam Rubinson, a Fort Worth native and former two-time All-American at TCU, is one of 10 golfers who will compete for Team USA against Great Britain & Ireland in this weekend's Walker Cup. Rubinson is the first TCU golfer ever to be invited to the prestigious match play event, which was first held in 1922 and is staged every other year.
The Walker Cup will be played Sept. 6-7, 2003, at the Ganton Golf Club in Yorkshire, England. The match play format consists of singles matches as well as foursomes. ABC will air Sunday's final round from 3-5 p.m. (CT).
Rubinson, a three-time all-conference performer, was named Conference USA's Player of the Year and third-team All-America as a senior in 2003. He claimed his first collegiate tournament title at the Western Refining All-America Classic last November. Rubinson led the 2002-03 Horned Frogs, who finished the season ranked 11th in the nation according to the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings system, with a 71.34 scoring average. Rubinson was honored as TCU's Male Co-Athlete of the Year following the school year.
One of the most decorated golfers in TCU history, he competed in all 51 tournaments over his four-year career, carrying a 72.93 scoring average over that time. Rubinson holds the school's 18-hole tournament scoring record, as he carded a 64 in the first round of the 2001 Ridges Intercollegiate. He finished second by just one stroke at the 2002 NCAA Championships and earned honorable mention accolades for his efforts.
The 23-year-old Rubinson has enjoyed an outstanding summer competing as an amateur. He tied for 10th at Sunnehanna, was fifth at the Northeast Amateur, won the Rice Planters Amateur and was a semifinalist at the Western Amateur. In addition, he advanced to the final 16 at the 2003 U.S. Amateur, one of just three Horned Frog golfers ever to reach that stage. Rubinson also competed on the United States Palmer Cup team and is currently rated sixth in the Golfweek/Titleist Men's Amateur Rankings.
"This is such a great honor for Adam," TCU head coach Bill Montigel said. "He has worked so hard to get where he is and has done all the right things along the way. Adam is truly a terrific person and will be a tremendous representative of TCU and a great ambassador for the United States."
The remaining members of the American team are: Casey Wittenberg, 18, of Memphis, Tenn.; Trip Kuehne, 31, of Dallas, Texas; Bill Haas, 21, of Greer, S.C.; Brock Mackenzie, 22, of Yakima, Wash.; Ryan Moore, 20, of Puyallup, Wash.; Matt Hendrix, 22, of Aiken, S.C.; Chris Nallen, 21, of Hackettstown, N.J.; George Zahringer, 50, of New York, N.Y.; and Lee Williams, 21, of Alexander City, Ala.
