Former Frog Guetz Playing in U.S. Open

Former TCU golfer Bret Guetz, who claimed the 2002 Conference USA individual championship and earned All-America honors, begins play in the 103rd U.S. Open on Thursday. Guetz tees off beginning at 9:00 a.m. (CT) on No. 10 in his first-ever PGA Tour event. On Friday, he will set out on No. 1 at 2:00 p.m.
A former walk-on at TCU, Guetz put together one of the most decorated seasons in TCU golf history in 2001-02. The senior grabbed third-team All-America honors, while also being honored as an Academic All-American. In doing so, he became the first Horned Frog golfer ever to achieve both honors in the same year.
Guetz won back-to-back tournaments for the Horned Frogs in April of 2002, and led the top-10 Horned Frogs into the NCAA Championships. For the season, Guetz donned an impressive 72.00 scoring average. His 54-hole score of 200 (-16) at the 2002 ASU Thunderbird set both school and tournament records.
Guetz earned a spot in the major after easily winning the sectional qualifier in his hometown of Littleton, Colo., on June 2. His two-round score of 136 (67-69) was five shots better than the runner-up score.
