FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Lonta Hobbs scored a 10-yard run early in the fourth quarter, helping No. 16 TCU (7-0, 4-0 Conference USA) pull out a 27-24 victory over UAB on Saturday night that keeps the Horned Frogs among the nation's few undefeated teams going into the release of the first BCS standings.
The Horned Frogs started nine drives within 60 yards of the end zone and came away with two touchdowns and four field goals. The kicks weren't all gimmes, either, as Nick Browne nailed 48- and 49-yarders.
TCU turned a 10-6 deficit with 1:43 left in the second quarter into a 16-10 halftime lead by scoring twice in the last 35 seconds. Hobbs capped a 47-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run, then UAB fumbled the ensuing kickoff at the 15. The Horned Frogs failed to get into the end zone, though, actually moving back five yards before Browne kicked a 37-yarder.
The Blazers scored on their first two drives of the third quarter to go ahead 24-16, then quarterback Darrell Hackney was hurt and their offense stalled. Backup Chris Williams failed to get a first down until the last drive, which ended when Chris People intercepted a deflected pass with 1:14 left.
UAB hurt itself with 12 penalties for 111 yards, including two for hitting the punt returner after he signaled for a fair catch. The Blazers were so disorganized that when taking down by three with 8:21 left, they had to call a timeout because there were 12 men on the field, then had a false start.
TCU also had to go to its backup quarterback, Brandon Hassell, as starter Tye Gunn strained a groin midway through the third quarter.
His first drive ended with Browne's 49-yarder, then after an interception on his next series he took the Horned Frogs 59 yards for the lead on Hobbs' 10-yard TD. A 2-point conversion pass to Chad Andrus stretched the lead.
Hassell was 4-of-10 for 57 yards and Gunn was 14-of-26 for 136 as TCU won its 11th straight at home. The Horned Frogs, winners of 17 of 18, avenged a loss to the Blazers in their only other meeting.
A TCU defense that had allowed only 37 points the last five games gave up scores on the first drive of each half, something it hadn't done in either half all season.
Hackney was 8-of-19 for 262 yards and a touchdown, and he ran five times for 58 yards and a touchdown. His first four completions went for 45, 44, 25 and 53 yards, the last a TD to Roddy White. He ran for only 1 yard in the first half, then had 57 during his brief time in the third quarter.
Williams was 3-of-11 for 34 yards. Trey Chaney ran for 37 yards, including an 9-yard TD that was UAB's final points.
