TCU Escapes UAB With 68-64 Victory

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The TCU Lady Frogs (17-4, 7-1 C-USA) completed a weekend road sweep with a 68-64 victory over the UAB Lady Blazers (9-13, 1-8 C-USA) on Sunday afternoon at Bartow Arena, where the Blazers are now 21-5 at Bartow Arena over the last two years. In the process, the Frogs blocked 15 shots, which tied a school record.
The Frogs had to fight through a free-throw discrepancy and foul problems all game long to earn the win. UAB connected on 23-of-31 free throws during the game, while TCU was 4-for-9 in the contest. However, Candace Baldwin iced the game at the charity stripe, draining a pair with :04 left to play to seal the game. TCU had just three attempts from the line prior to the final two minutes. TCU led by as many as 14 at 58-44 with 7:59 remaining, but the Blazers made a late charge to make the game interesting.
"We battled foul trouble all night long," head coach Jeff Mittie. "It's a rewarding win because we had to battle through some things today. Each game presents different challenges, and we're learning that each time we play."
Tiffany Evans continued her outstanding play for TCU. She was dominant defensively, registering a school-record and Conference USA-record 12 blocked shots. She also set a career high with nine assists, the most assists by a TCU player this season.
TCU had as much as a 10-point advantage in the first half, but a 7-0 run by the Blazers to close the half trimmed TCU's edge to 34-31. TCU is now 15-0 when leading at the midway point.
Sandora Irvin had a team-high 14 points and six rebounds for the Frogs. Kati Safaritova registered 13 points before fouling out, while Ebony Shaw had 11 points, including three key three-pointers early in the second half.
After four straight games on the road, the Frogs return home to Daniel-Meyer Coliseum with a pair of weekend home contests. TCU hosts Southern Miss on Fri., Feb. 8 at 7:00 p.m. and Tulane at 1:00 p.m. on Sun., Feb. 10.
