Women's Tennis Loses Heartbreaker to Baylor

FORT WORTH, Texas - Following a nine-day hiatus, the 23rd-ranked TCU women's tennis team dropped a tough match to No. 21 Baylor at home on Tuesday. Determination of the match winner came down to the last singles match of the day between TCU's Katrin Gaber and Baylor's Vida Mulec. The Frogs, now 3-2, came out on the short end as the Bears (4-2) took the win, 4-3.
Baylor picked up the doubles point with its wins at Nos. 1 and 2, but the Frogs captured the No. 3 win. Senior Katrin Gaber and freshman Karla Mancinas took Daria Potapova and Paola Stephen to the tiebreaker to win the match 9-8 (6).
TCU took over the match lead as the Frogs earned wins at No. 5 when TCU junior Rosa Perez defeated Daria Potapova, 6-3, 7-5, and at No. 4 when sophomore Saber Pierce topped Frida Borjesson, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. However, the Frogs' last singles win of the day, was the most impressive.
Sophomore Paty Aburto, ranked No. 98 by the ITA, met No. 29 Katja Kovac at the No. 1 position. The two battled back and forth during the first two sets, but Aburto took control in the third and took the upset win, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
The last three TCU players each took their Baylor opponents to the full three sets, but none came away with a win to give the Frogs the important fourth point they needed to win the match.
The two teams played one extra singles match featuring TCU freshman Ivonne Andrade and Whitney Morton. Andrade earned the win in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3.
TCU will spend the weekend in Lubbock competing at the Texas Tech Team Tournament. The Frogs will open the tournament against the host Red Raiders on Friday, Feb. 15 at 1:00 p.m. TCU will then meet No. 59 New Mexico on Feb. 16 (1:00 p.m.) and No. 32 Florida International at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 17.
