Aburto and Perez Qualify for Doubles Semis

FORT WORTH, Texas - Senior Rosa Perez and junior Paty Aburto advanced to the semifinals of the main draw doubles at the 2002 Omni Hotels Southwest Regional Championships. The Championships are being hosted by TCU at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The singles finalists and doubles champions will advance to the Omni Hotels/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held Nov. 7-10 at Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas. The TCU duo defeated Nicole Bouffler and Svenja Fuhrig of UT-San Antonio by a score of 8-4 in the Round of 16 to move into Sunday's quarterfinals. Late Sunday afternoon, Aburto and Perez added an 8-2 win over Kendall Brooks and Tara Browning of Texas Tech to place themselves in Monday's semifinals. The pair will take on Rocio Fantilli and Lauren Seaman of LSU to earn a position in the finals. Defending champions Irina Tereschenko and Beverly Dawson of Texas Tech will match-up with Jenny Kuhn and Julie Smekodub of Tulane in the other semifinal.
Junior Saber Pierce and sophomore Karla Mancinas lost their bid to advance beyond the Round of 32, when Kuhn/Smekodub (Tulane) battled back to win 8-5. Mancinas won a thriller of a match against Ashley Sammis of North Texas in consolation action by a score of 6-7, 7-6, 7-6. Junior Emily Waters fell in straight sets to Mindy Ko (Rice), 7-6, 6-4, while Sandra Blajer (Houston) topped sophomore Molly Purdy, 6-1, 6-4. Junior Rebecca Reynolds fell 6-0, 6-0 to Alison Bradley of Baylor. Junior Saber Pierce battled in three-sets with Kendall Exelby of UTEP, only to fall short, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6.
Action concludes Monday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The singles semifinals will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by the singles finals. Doubles semifinals and finals will finish out the weekend's action.
