ATHENS, Georgia (May 26, 2001) -- Senior Trace Fielding and sophomore Jimmy Haney of the TCU men's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. with a 6-3, 6-4, win over Peter Luczak and David Mullins of Fresno State. Fielding and Haney are ranked 16th nationally, while Luczak and Mullins are ranked No. 5 in the country.
The TCU pair lost to Luczak and Mullins in the finals of the WAC Championships earlier this season by an 8-4 score.
By advancing to the quarterfinals of the doubles championships, Fielding and Haney are assured All-American status in doubles. TCU's last doubles team to capture those honors were Ashley Fisher and Jason Weir-Smith in 1997. This will be Fielding and Haney's first All-American honors in their careers.
Their opponents tomorrow will be Travis Parrott and Matias Boeker of national champion Georgia. Parrott and Boeker are ranked fourth in the country and won their match today in straight sets as well over Kyle Kliegerman and John Portlock of Princeton 7-6(0), 6-2.
