Men's Tennis Blanks UTA In NCAA Regionals

FORT WORTH, Texas (May 12, 2001) -- TCU's fourth-ranked men's tennis team, seeded fifth in the NCAA tournament, won its opening round match against Southland Conference champion Texas-Arlington 4-0 on the Bernard J. "Tut" Bartzen Varsity Courts at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth, Texas. With the win, TCU improved to 21-3 on the year, while UTA's season ended at 17-9 in their first NCAA tournament appearance.
The Frogs grabbed the early 1-0 by winning one and two doubles 8-5 and 8-2. TCU is now 16-0 this season when winning the doubles point.
In the singles action, TCU's Jimmy Haney, Daniel Wajnberg and Toni Gordon won their matches at No. 6, 5 and 4 singles in straight sets to give TCU the 4-0 win.
After the match, TCU head coach Joey Rive said of the Horned Frog's win, "I was happy with the way our guys came out. Winning the doubles point was a great start and our four, five and six singles have been solid all year. As long as we continue to prepare for our matches, things will take care of themselves."
TCU sophomore Toni Gordon, who won his match at four singles, said after the match, "Coach (Rive) talked to us beforehand about not being over-confident and we did did a good job of staying humble today."
TCU defeated UTA in its first match of the year on January 29 by a 7-0 score, winning every position in straight sets.
TCU will face the winner of No. 29 Baylor and No. 40 Tulane in the finals of the regional tournament tomorrow, May 13, at noon. The winner will advance to the NCAA Championships in Athens, Georgia on May 19-28.
