BROKEN ARROW, Okla. (May 1, 2001) - The TCU men's golf team must rally in the final round of the WAC Championships after slipping into second place following Tuesday's blustery second round at the Forest Ridge Golf Club in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. The Horned Frogs have a 36-hole score of 591 and trail the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (587) by four strokes.
"I don't think we played very well on the back," head coach Bill Montigel said. "The course played hard today. We played well on the front nine, but we had some big numbers overall. I hope we can turn it around tomorrow. Our guys just have to come out and play the best they can."
Individually, TCU senior Scott Volpitto is tied for first place with Tulsa freshman David Inglis at one-under-par (143). After netting an opening-round 69, Volpitto countered with a 74 in Tuesday's tough conditions. The duo is four strokes ahead of the rest of the pack.
TCU's four other competitors also rank among the tournament's Top 20. Senior Aaron Hickman put together a round of 74 to jump into a tie for 10th place with a two-day 149. The Frogs' other scorers include: sophomore Adam Rubinson (T13th-151), junior Andy Doeden (T13th-151) and freshman Stephen Polanski (T18th-152).
Rounding out the team scores are: UTEP (598), SMU (601), Fresno State (607), Hawai'i (608), Nevada (611), Rice (612) and San Jose State (617).
Play concludes with the final 18 holes on Wednesday. TCU's first tee time is scheduled for 9:40 a.m.
