FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU improved to 4-2 on the season and claimed the Cook Children's TCU Hoops Classic title with a 26-point victory over San Diego State on Sunday afternoon at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The Lady Frogs, who won 75-49, held an opponent to 50 points or less for the fourth time in six games.
The first half was tightly contested, and San Diego State led by as many as five with 6:24 left in the first half. However, TCU went on a 14-4 run to close the half and led 32-27 at intermission. The second half was all TCU, as the Frogs outscored the Aztecs 43-22 after the break. The Frogs knocked down 7-of-11 three-point attempts in the half and finished the game 10-for-18 from long range.
"We played much better in the second half," head coach Jeff Mittie said. "We had some better ball movement and were able to wear them down."
TCU won the battle of the boards, 45-32, for the fifth time this season and limited the Aztecs to just 32.7 percent shooting (17-for-52) for the game.
Ashanti Nix led the way with a career-high 15 points and a team-best five assists. Sandora Irvin grabbed her third double-double of the season with a 12-point, 12-rebounds performance. Grace Gantt added 11 points in the contest and earned tournament MVP honors. She was joined by TCU teammates Nix and Irvin, San Diego State's Atim Otti and Prairie View A&M's Monica Grass.
The Frogs next host Rutgers on Sat., Dec. 8 at 1:00 p.m. at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. It is the third game for the Frogs in a nine-game homestand.
