FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU head coach Jeff Mittie announced today that a pair of coveted junior college players from Seward County Community College and a Texas prep standout have signed letters of intent to play for the Lady Frogs in the 2002-03 season. Point guard Kimmie Ortega and forwards Tracy Wynn and Ashley Davis all inked with TCU during the early signing period.
Ortega and Wynn currently play for head coach Jim Littell at Seward, a junior college powerhouse located in Liberal, Kan. Their 2000-01 team went 31-1, repeated as Jayhawk West Champions with a perfect 16-0 record and were ranked No. 1 in the final NJCAA poll for the second consecutive season.
Ortega, a 5-8 sophomore point guard, averaged 17.7 points, 6.5 assists and 4.7 steals per game as a freshman for the Lady Saints. Ortega's play earned her Kodak and NJCAA All-American honors, and she also was named the Region VI Most Valuable Player, Region VI Freshman of the Year, Jayhawk West Freshman of the Year and Jayhawk West MVP. This year Ortega has been picked as a preseason first-team All-American by the NJCAA. Ortega, a native of Logandale, Nev., chose TCU over Oklahoma and Louisiana Tech.
Wynn, who stands 6-3, posted team bests with 15.4 points and 8.9 rebounds per game as a freshman. A native of Booker, Texas, Wynn earned Region VI and Jayhawk League first-team honors, all-conference second-team honors and was named to the region's all-tournament team. This year Wynn has been tabbed as a preseason second-team All-American by the NJCAA. Wynn selected TCU over Oklahoma, Valparaiso, Nebraska and Oral Roberts.
"Both players come from an outstanding basketball program," Mittie said. "Coach Littell does a great job developing talent and we're very fortunate to be able to sign both Kimmie and Tracy. The fact that they come from a winning program like Seward is important because they know what it takes to be a successful team."
Davis was an all-state, all-region and all-district performer last season at Taft High School in San Antonio, Texas. The 6-2 forward averaged 22.0 points and 12.1 rebounds per game as a junior. She is ranked 24th in the state of Texas and is regarded as one of the top 150 players in the nation. She was recruited by Texas A&M, Colorado, Stephen F. Austin and Houston.
"We believe that Ashley has the tools to be an outstanding player," Mittie said. "She possesses the versatility that we always look for in a player."
