Gaber Wins Flight A Bracket Title

FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU senior Katrin Gaber won the Flight A bracket of the 2001 Conference USA Individual Women's Tennis Tournament on Sunday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the TCU campus. Gaber defeated the fourth-seeded Monika Schmid of UAB in three sets by scores of 5-7, 6-2, 10-4. Freshman Karla Mancinas took home the Flight A West Draw title with her win over Jennifer Sinclair of South Florida (5-7, 6-0, 11-9). Rosa Perez rounded out the Flight A winners for TCU as she defeated Monica Gonzalez-Gordo (Memphis) in the Northeast Draw final.
Brenna Shackelford playing in the North Draw final of Flight B dropped her match to Cris Reyes of Cincinnati 8-4. The South Draw final between Molly Purdy and Olivia Berry (Southern Miss), and the Southeast Draw final between Emily Waters and Renee Pinkenburg were unplayed.
Sophomore Paty Aburto and doubles partner Perez won the Flight A doubles title, while Gaber and Mancinas fell to Capuzzi and Italia of Cincinnati in the Northeast Draw final (8-4). In Flight B, Shackelford and senior Leoni Weirich took the title with their defeat of Bergman and Cook from Tulane (8-3). Rebecca Reynolds and Waters fell in the South Draw final to Eber and Torres of Louisville (8-4). Pinkenburg and partner Purdy took the Flight C Round 4 win over Hughes and Clifford, a team with players from Memphis and Charlotte.
The Frogs have finished the fall individual season, and begin preparing for the spring team competitions which begin with a home match on January 26, 2002 against Middle Tennessee State.
