Three Frogs Fall at Omni Hotels Region VI Championships

FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU junior Toni Gordon and senior Daniel Wajnberg of the men's tennis team saw their run in the Omni Hotels Region VI Championships come to an end Sunday morning at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth. Sophomore Mauro Batesteza also lost his consolation singles match.
The fifth-seeded Gordon lost a nail-biter to No. 4-seed Ryan Newport of Texas A&M. The Barcelona-native won the first set 6-3, but lost the last two 7-6, 7-6, in an exhausting three-set match. Newport later fell to No. 1-seed Jean Simon of Texas, 7-6, 6-4.
Wajnberg, the No. 15-seed, fell in straight-set tiebreaks to Texas-Arlington's No. 3-seed Andy Leber. Leber went on to defeat No. 10-seed Rodrigo Echagaray of Texas, 6-3, 6-4.
Batesteza fell to Mithun Murali of Arkansas-Little Rock, 6-4, 6-4, in the quarters of the singles consolation. Murali went on to win the consolation singles bracket by defeating Texas Tech's Ricard Crabtree, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Leber and Simon will meet for the singles crown of the Omni Hotels Region VI Championships tomorrow, Oct. 29, at 9:00 a.m. (CT). Following their match, Leber will team with David Corrie in the doubles final against No. 6-seed Markus Hornunq and Reiner Neurohr of Baylor. Corrie and Leber enter the match seeded fourth.
