FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU will be hosting the 2001 Omni Hotels Region VI Championships beginning this Friday, Oct. 26, at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth. The singles finalists and doubles champions from this event will earn spots in the Nov. 8-11 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas.
The 2001 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the nation's premier collegiate indoor tennis tournament, is the second of three national championship events for college tennis this season. The ITA Men's All-American Championships, held two weeks ago, and the season-ending NCAA Championships in May comprise the remainder of the national championship events.
The Omni Hotels Regional Championships date back to 1981 and have been previously known as the Rolex Regional Championships and ITA Regional Championships. The regional championships feature the top men's and women's players from each of the ITA's regions at the NCAA Division I level.
The 16 schools with players competing in the regional include TCU, Texas A&M, Texas, SMU, Baylor, Rice, Arkansas, Arkansas-Little Rock, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Texas Tech, Texas-Arlington, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas-San Antonio, Texas-Pan American and Lamar.
The format for the Omni Hotels Region VI Championships features a 128-man singles draw and a doubles draw of 64 teams. Consolation matches will be played following first round action. The tournament draw will be set Thursday, Oct. 25.
The tournament will also be using an experimental games scoring system called "Collegiate Game Scoring." Collegiate Game Scoring, also known as One Ad scoring, is a scoring method similar to No Ad scoring, but considered less radical. CGS allows one deuce if the score goes to 3-3 (or 40-40). The game is won by reaching four points with at least a margin of two points (4-0, 4-1, 4-2) or a score of either 5-3 or 5-4.
First round matches begin at 8:30 a.m. (CT) this Friday. Singles and doubles finals will be played at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 29. Play will begin at approximately 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. for Saturday and Sunday. Results will be made available via the Internet at www.TennisInformation.com and www.GoFrogs.com. Admission to the event is free.
